Irish Independent

In a big house, in a small town, three sisters wait. They wait for the right time to leave. They wait for the love they deserve. They wait for their lives to begin. And while they wait, the world turns.

Chekhov’s classic is given a contemporary Irish treatment by Sugarglass and award-winning playwright Ciara Elizabeth Smyth (Lie Low, Royal Court Theatre). An examination of nostalgia, purpose and the cyclical nature of history, this new version speaks to a generation whose lives were put on ice by Covid, housing crises and failed promises of the future. With a sharp twist of humour, Chekhov’s original is stripped back to reveal its essential modernity.

Starring an ensemble of Ireland’s finest actors and musicians including Derry Girls’ Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Megan Cusack (Call the Midwife), Lorcan Cranitch (Cracker), Alex Murphy (The Young Offenders) and Máiréad Tyers (Extraordinary), Three Sisters headlined Dublin Theatre Festival and played to over 8,000 people across seven sold-out performances at the Gaiety Theatre.

“Maybe when more time has gone by, in two or three hundred years, people will know how to catch the fire before it ignites.”
