A Misanthrope

Brigid Leahy, Matthew Malone and Darragh Feehely

The best of Irish theatre 2025.

The Irish Times

A knockout satire of a horny and insincere Silicon Docks. Head-spinningly impressive.

★★★★ The Irish Times

Witty, inventive and entertaining. The performances are first class overall.

★★★★★ The Mail on Sunday

Molière relocated to Dublin’s Silicon Docks — a world of juice bars, cold brew and networking, where honesty is the one thing nobody can afford. Matt Minnicino’s adaptation finds the follies of seventeenth-century high society mirrored precisely in the Instagram generation.

Conceived by Molly O’Cathain and Marc Atkinson Borrull, and staged at Smock Alley Theatre in the summer of 2025.

Poster for A Misanthrope
“The world’s a wasteland, all that’s left is frost. We ran the human race, and hey! We lost.”

Credits

A brilliantly funny update of Molière’s 1666 farce. It features a choreographed sex scene that for technical difficulty (9.9) and artistic merit (10.0) would rival any gymnastics routine.

Frank McNally, The Irish Times

A delicious reimagining of baroque excesses, updated for the Instagram generation. O’Cathain’s design is terrific.

Irish Independent

Innovative and joyous theatre. Your brain is alive as you leave the auditorium.
